The American Diabetes Association’s 74th Scientific Sessions in San Francisco exploded with lectures, presentations, abstracts, posters, panels, and awards that mainly focused on the broad scope of discovery and science looking for answers and breakthroughs in the many nuances of diabetes, while hopefully improving the lives of those of us who live with diabetes. It seems the more that is discovered, the more questions pop up. It's like trying to scratch a hard to reach itch in the middle of your back.

After the ADA, I headed three and a half hours up the coast to give some talks about the importance of being physically active as part of real time diabetes management. I was asked to speak to a group of doctors and clinicians. At the close of the talk, I urged them to take time to inspire their patients on the possibilities of following their dreams. For many PWD's, dealing with the daily requisites of diabetes management becomes overwhelming. Inspiration and encouragement from a health care team can make a difference.
You can also find motivation from the women in The Sisterhood of Diabetes. I recently learned that three of the young women in the book, Jenny Vandervelde, Kayley Wolf and Ashley Napear contacted each other to plan a snowboarding trip in Washington. What a great example of motivation! There is a strong and growing community of PWD's out there. They are finding each other through support groups, local diabetes organizations, diabetes websites, blogs and conferences. So, if you need some motivation to inspire you today check to see if there is a TCOYD, Diabetes Sisters or other diabetes conference coming to your area. Due to summer’s bounty of vibrant vegetables I have been inspired by chopping and slicing everything into a bowl, pulsating everything in the blender, and within minutes have a delightful, nutritious, easy to make and refreshing summer soup - Gazpacho. Here is all you have to do
- Coarsely chop 1 large garlic clove, 1 lb. tomatoes (remove the core as you cut them up), 1 small red bell and green bell pepper (remove seeds of course), 2 stalks celery, 1 bunch arugula (stems removed), 1 cucumber (peeled and seeded), ½ red onion, 3 cups tomato juice, 1 Tbs. olive oil, freshly ground pepper.
- Transfer to a food processor or blender and pulse to smooth out a little but don’t puree to smooth. It is best to enjoy nice and chunky.
- Chill a couple hours if you can resist not eating it immediately!
1 cup = 75 cal., 16 carb grams, 2 grams protein, 2 grams fat, 2 grams fiber.
