Diabetes in Indian country has reached pandemic status.  There are Native American tribes who have the highest rates of diabetes in the world with over 50% of their members diagnosed.  We are attempting to fight back by raising awareness of at-risk behavior, promoting healthy lifestyles, and implementing the latest developments in living with and preventing diabetes.

Almost everyone with diabetes has a run in with health insurance concerns at one time or another. A quick search of "diabetes" and "insurance" brings up hundreds of forum topics with people talking about their insurance woes. Most people with diabetes either have insurance that won't cover enough of their diabetes needs, like test strips, labs, and doctor's visits or don't have insurance to help at all.

Participating in clinical trials can help you receive treatment you would usually not have available. Unfortunately, finding clinical trials can be a hassle. First, you have to find trials you qualify for. Of those trials, you need to be able to get to them. Camp DAVI (Diabetes Assoc. of the Virgin Islands) is unlike any other diabetes experience you'll ever experience. You'll find this camp at beautiful Lamshure Bay in the National Park of St. John in the Virgin Islands. The camp is located at the Virgin Islands Resource Station and run by the University of the Virgin Islands.

Diabetes can be expensive and many people with it need help paying some of the bills. Having an insurance plan in place would be ideal but is not the case for everyone. If you lack health care coverage, many drug companies provide healthcare assistance if you meet specific requirements. Below is a list of sites that can help you get specific assistance. For the pharmaceutical sites, determine who manufactures the drug you need and contact them to see what assistance they can provide.

Children With Diabetes

People from nearly every state in the U.S. and a dozen countries travel to attend the CWD conferences. Participants include children, parents, grandparents, and young adults. This year's upcoming conferences should be a success as well.
