Synthetic Blood International - Implantable Glucose Biosensor Surgical Methods, Measures glucose by means of an implanted device.

Synthetic Blood International is a biomedical product development company specializing in creating innovative pharmaceuticals and medical devices in the fields of liquid ventilation, oxygen therapeutics, blood substitutes, and implanted glucose sensing. Many of their technology platforms are based on the pioneering research of Dr. Leland Clark, developer of the first heart-lung machine and the Clark oxygen and glucose biosensor electrodes.

Product development at SYBD is taking place on several innovative technological platforms, including the Glucose Biosensor. The implanted Glucose Biosensor continuously monitors blood glucose without the need for finger sticks. SYBD's implanted biosensor can be programmed to monitor blood glucose according to a predetermined schedule, thus eliminating problems of patient compliance. The sensor alarms for dangerous, life threatening conditions such as hypoglycemia.

The device is said to be made with similar materials you would find in a cardiac-pacemaker. New patents related to the sensor include an encased titanium battery and microprocessor as well a glucose oxidase enzyme system encapsulated in a semipermiable cellophane acetate membrane which provides continuous, accurate monitoring of blood glucose. Results are displayed as a digital readout in a wearable beeper-sized device that it hopes will have an implant life of over one year.
