Dexcom - Transdermal Glucose Oxidase Enzyme
DexCom, headquartered in San Diego, California, is focused on developing technology for continuous glucose monitoring to improve the lives of people with diabetes. Their DexCom STS system was approved by the FDA on March 27, 2006. Since then, Dexcom has upgraded their system to the new Dexcom SEVEN.
The SEVEN System measures glucose every 5 minutes throughout the day and night, allowing users to see trends and patterns in glucose readings. Glucose trends, alerts, and a low ALARM provided by the SEVEN System help users stay between the lines of their target glucose range.
The Dexcom SEVEN ships with:
- The SEVEN Transmitter - discreet, wireless transmission, gentle adhesive
- The SEVEN Receiver - designed for easy viewing, wireless, range of up to 5 feet, stores 30 days of data, data is downloadable to a computer
- DexCom Data Manager 2 Accessory Software
- receiver carry case/belt clip
- receiver charging cable
The SEVEN Sensor has a tiny flexible wire sensor that goes under the skin. The sensor fits inside a 26 gauge needle within an easy to use, disposable applicator. The design of the applicator allows nearly painless insertion of the needle in which the applicator also withdraws, leaving the wire sensor under the skin. Sensors are sold separately, in packs of 4, from the monitor. The design of the applicator allows nearly painless insertion of the needle which the applicator also withdraws, leaving the wire sensor under the skin.
The Dexcom SEVEN offers several unique features:
- largest display screen
- a 1 hour trend window on the display that shows clearly whether the glucose flattened out, is continuing to rise or fall,
- quick access to 1, 3, or 9 hr glucose trend lines (sorry, no 24 hr trend line)
- audible and vibrating alerts that are easier to hear and feel than other continuous monitors
- lower cost of operation than other continous monitors
Dexcom is working with two insulin pump companies to eliminate their receiver by moving the display into the Animas 2020 pump with its color screen or the Omnipod with its separate pump controller which has a PDA-like screen. For pump wearers, this eliminates the readout device but still requires two skin sites, one for the glucose sensor and another for insulin delivery.
Additional features of the SEVEN Sensor:
- the sensor and transmitter are now waterproof when hooked together
- transmitter includes a new microprocessor for improved Sensor data processing
- there is a status window to tell you exactly what the receiver is doing (i.e. receiving information, out of range, etc)
- now shows the time length until sensor expiration
- now able to calibrate with any meter, not just the OneTouch Ultra
- no connection cable needed for calibration
The Dexcom STS, can be upgraded to the new Dexcom SEVEN for $325. In the upgrade kit, you will receive:
- SEVEN Receiver
- SEVEN Transmitter
- DexCom Data Manager 2 Accessory Software
- 4 Pack of SEVEN Sensors ($240 value)
Dexcom is not yet available for those under 18 years of age, but is seeking FDA approval for its shorter sensor for kids.
